Physician Suicide: The Other Epidemic Impacting America’s Frontline Doctors

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and though every suicide is a lost life, physician suicide is the focus of this article. Doctors die by suicide at a higher rate than any other profession. More than 400 physicians each year end their life own lives.

That is, before COVID-19 overstressed an already overtaxed health system.

It is feared that 2020 will be the breaking point for many more physicians as ERs and ICUs fill up with coronavirus patients. Mental health concerns among physicians are at an all-time high as frontline physicians face more burnout and stress than ever.

More time at home doesn’t have to be the end of the world.

The coronavirus has forced us to sit back and wait until the epidemic has fully unfolded. I’ve heard so many complaints about being forced to stay home and comply with social distancing recommendations.

But, folks, apparently the threat is real. While are facing what could potentially be one of the most significant events in our generation, we have two choices. We can let it define us or we can make the best out of a bad situation.

So few people today are accustomed to staying home for lengthy periods of time. So I understand it will a challenge for many…

You don’t have to be poor to be a freelance writer.

I joined Medium a year ago as a part-time freelancer. In the beginning, I hoped to make a successful transition to more full-time work here on the platform, but I quickly had to remind myself that I had bills to pay.

During my time as a Medium writer, I’ve been fortunate enough to cross paths with many talented and ambitious writers who have so much to offer. I’ve been part of Medium communities where writers share their passions, successes, failures, and complaints. …

And always…

As many of us have learned by now, life isn’t a Hallmark movie. The sentimental movies would have you believe that Christmas is a stress-free holiday where everyone is smiling. All. The. Time. And don’t forget! There are always happy endings.

Hallmark movies only exist within the reels they’re played on. The truth is that Christmas is stressful! But, does it have to be? And is there a way to feel less overwhelmed during the holidays?

We are now nearing the end of the first week in December, and I still don’t have a Christmas tree up. …

Or anywhere you want to thrive as a writer.

I’ve kind of been MIA here on Medium the past couple of months and that’s because my freelance writing career has just been crazy busy. In spite of me taking a break here on Medium though, I’ve still had several people reading my articles and reaching out, in particular, the ones where I talk about Upwork.

So, I thought it was time to write another article about my experience as a freelance writer on Upwork.

Standing Out as a Freelance Writer — Let’s Talk About How to Do It.

So, some of the common complaints I hear from freelancers who sign up on Upwork are:

  • “The market is oversaturated on Upwork. …

So Why Isn’t it Being Treated Like One?

If you look up the word epidemic in Miriam Webster’s dictionary, you’ll find the following:

In fairness, while the applications of those definitions tend to refer to a disease that is primarily infectious, or spread from one person to another, the very basic meaning of the word still applies as outlined in the definition.

Which brings me to autoimmune disease. To be clear, autoimmune illnesses are not contagious and cannot spread from one person to another.

You have to think of yourself as an entrepreneur.

When I first began my career as a freelance writer, I had a completely different mindset about it than I do now.

I was desperate to succeed. The only formal writing job I had prior to freelancing was 10 years before as an assistant editor for our local newspaper.

Writing about what’s going on in your local community is one thing. Writing blogs and web content is another thing altogether. There was so much I had to learn.

So, I figured I had to sell myself. In the beginning, that wasn’t so much about selling my skills as much as…

It’s more important during a conversation than you may believe.

The other day while at a cafe, I made a common mistake that I’ve repeated before. Let me give you a little background.

A friend and I had been wanting to visit this new tea house in town. I’d actually been there before with my husband. I told my friend it was the perfect spot for a chatty visit.

I’d told her about how delicious the plain scones with lemon curd and the soups were. Unfortunately, once we sat down, we learned they were out of soup and some of the scones, including the plain ones I’d bragged about.

While we’re busy building digital ones, is our personal life suffering?

Digital life has become a huge factor in many areas of our lives. We ‘connect’ with others through social media a thousand times a day. We’re doing more of our shopping online, and for many of us, we’re even working from home via the Internet.

I also know of a number of people where online gaming takes up a good portion of their time. Like so many others, I now watch my favorite television shows on my computer.

With so much of our time being spent virtually, I wondered if we’re losing our real-life relationships with each other? …

I’ll tell you what I believe. It’s probably not what you think.

The other day, I realized it had been many hours since I prayed to God. While some might think there’s nothing unusual about that, I did. You see, I’m kind of accustomed to praying to God many times a day, maybe not in the way you might imagine I do. But, it was an unusually busy day and I was trying to play catch-up on my work.

I’ve had people ask me before how I pray to God and I thought it’d be nice to write about it.

As with many things concerning God, I feel so many people complicate…
